Yangtze River Cableway

The Chongqing Yangtze River Cableway is one of the city’s iconic transportation systems, first put into operation in 1987. It is not only a tool for daily travel for Chongqing residents but also a symbol of the city.

Due to Chongqing’s complex terrain, with the Yangtze and Jialing rivers dividing the city into three parts, the cross-river cableway became the most convenient way to get across. Suspended above the Yangtze River, taking the cableway not only makes it easier to reach the other side but also allows you to see the vast Yangtze River, the scenery on the opposite bank, and the unique look of the mountain city.

However, with the rapid development of urban construction and the popularity of tourism in Chongqing, the Yangtze River Cableway has gradually turned into a tourist attraction. The proportion of locals using it has greatly decreased, as many now choose the metro or bus for travel.

The cableway has a total length of 1,166 meters, connecting Yuzhong District and Nan’an District, with a one-way trip taking about 4 minutes and 30 seconds. It has two stations: the south station is near Shangxin Street(上新街) in Nan’an District(南岸区), and the north station is in Yuzhong District(渝中区), close to famous attractions like Hongya Cave and Jiefangbei, so visitors can plan to visit these spots on the same day.
