Ili Museum, officially known as the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture Museum, is a general-purpose museum covering over 6,700 square meters. As of 2022, it housed a collection of 6,436 items.
The exhibits here are closely tied to the region’s history and culture. Compared to other museums, this one puts more focus on Yili’s local grassland traditions and its mix of ethnic groups.
One of the highlights is a bronze warrior statue from before the Common Era, showing the image of a nomadic soldier from a thousand years ago. It gives a glimpse into the military culture of the region at that time.
You’ll also find many objects used by nomadic communities—traditional clothing, household items, and more—from groups such as the Kazakhs and Mongols.
There are also coins, textiles, and tools from the Silk Road era on display.
If you're into nomadic culture or regional history, Ili Museum is worth a visit. Going with a guide is recommended if you want to better understand what you're seeing.
