Movie Town Haikou, also known as Feng Xiaogang Movie Town (冯小刚电影公社), is a large film-themed cultural tourism area. It is named after Feng Xiaogang (冯小刚), one of China’s best-known film directors. A number of well-known Chinese films, TV dramas, and variety shows have been filmed here, including Youth, The Little Nyonya, and The Southern Archives.
The main streets in Movie Town Haikou can be grouped into four styles:
1942 Republic of China Street (Republican-era style): Built based on the Chongqing street scenes from the film Back to 1942, with design details drawn from Republican-era architecture in other Chinese cities as well.
Nanyang Street (Nanyang style): Designed around the look of Haikou’s arcade buildings, mainly to recreate the atmosphere of Southeast Asian Chinese communities.
The East Is Red Area (early New China red-era style): Built with reference to Beijing from the 1950s to the 1970s, after the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
Youth Courtyard (1970s Chinese military style): This set was built for the well-known Chinese film Youth at a cost of 35 million yuan. After filming ended, the sets were kept and became part of the scenic area. More than 80% of the film was shot here.
This is a very photogenic place, especially Republic of China Street and Nanyang Street.
The scenic area has various live performances that are included with admission, such as Stories of Nanyang and Recreating Youth. Performance times may vary, and some shows may be paused on certain days.
There are also themed pop-up performances around the area, giving visitors the feeling of stepping into another time period.
