The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum, known as Xinjiang Museum for short, is a must-visit attraction in Urumqi.
Here you can see historical relics related to the Silk Road, including many nationally treasured artifacts such as the Han-dynasty brocade with the inscription “Five Stars Rise in the East, Benefiting China,” Tang-dynasty painted wooden statues of Heavenly Kings, Persian silver coins, and Roman glass cups. These exhibits offer a better understanding of the history and civilization of China’s Western Regions. Among them, the Han-dynasty brocade “Five Stars Rise in the East, Benefiting China” is prohibited from being exhibited abroad, and it is said to have remarkably predicted modern China.
The museum also houses the richest collection of mummies in the country. One of the highlights is the “Beauty of Loulan,” a 3,800-year-old mummy, one of the most famous in China, with hair and skin still clearly visible.
In addition, you can see the traditional clothing and cultural customs of various ethnic groups, including the Uyghur and Kazakh peoples.
Take bus lines 7, 910, D015, and others to the museum, or grab a taxi.
