Kuanzhai Alley is located in the Shaocheng area of Qingyang District, Chengdu, Sichuan Province, along the western section of Shudu Avenue. It is one of the most popular and Instagram-worthy attractions in Chengdu.
Built during the Qing Dynasty, Kuanzhai Alley has a history of more than 300 years. Although it is a historic old street, it is filled with a youthful and modern vibe.
Kuanzhai Alley consists of Wide Alley, Narrow Alley, and Jing Alley. In fact, the difference in width between Wide Alley and Narrow Alley is not very significant—Wide Alley is only slightly wider. There is a popular saying that “wide” and “narrow” represent social status: officials and elites lived in Wide Alley, while ordinary people lived in Narrow Alley. However, this is not entirely accurate. It is more correct to say that during the Republican era, elites tended to live in Wide Alley, while common residents lived in Narrow Alley.
The area also features many traditional Chinese courtyard houses (siheyuan). Visitors can enjoy tea in old teahouses, experience ear cleaning, and explore various shops with local Chengdu characteristics. It is a must-visit spot for many young people, where history and modern trends come together. Even without buying anything, simply strolling around and taking photos allows you to experience the everyday life and local culture of Chengdu.
